Several weeks ago, I blogged about Michael Dell and members of our ReGeneration team were in Washington, DC to participate in the IT Energy Efficiency Summit hosted by CIO magazine. Gary Beach, publisher emeritus at CIO, conducted a moderated Q&A with Michael during the event, which was attended by about 100 CIOs and other IT decision makers from the public and private sectors.
In this recent article, Are You Green?, Gary recaps his discussion with Michael and suggests that "green is the new black in corporate computing" - an IT fashion point that Dell strongly agrees with! Gary shares key takeaways for any CIO who wants to introduce green into their operations, including getting your CEO on board with your energy efficiency initiatives; reducing power consumption in your data center; aligning your IT and facilities departments; and holding your suppliers accountable.
Gary intends to continue his green conversation with Michael with an online Q&A to be published on or around Earth Day, April 22. Stay tuned for more details on that. In the meantime, check out the following vlog in which Gary shares his thoughts and observations on the noticeable "awakening" happening amongst CIOs around the growing need to go green.

Today, customers in the United States who are in need of a rugged laptop can order the Latitude XFR D630. It builds on the Latitude ATG D620 by offering new laptop technology in a chassis that's more rugged than ever before. It meets the Department of Defense's rigid MIL-STD 810F specifications that are aimed at products that are used in extreme temperatures, mositure, altitudes, etc.
In designing the product, Dell worked to bring perfomance and durability together. Compared to many other competitive products that use older technology, the XFR stands out in terms of overall performance. It also joins the Dell Precision M4300 mobile workstations as one of our first systems that support the new generation of solid state hard drives. For those customers that opt for a traditional hard drive, the XFR D630 features shock-isolated mounting to help protect the hard drive, LCD and core electronic components.
So what makes it a rugged laptop? A sealed keyboard protects it from driving rain and dust; port covers protect external ports from the elements. it also features a display with a brightness of 500 nits - which makes it suitable for outdoor viewing.
Also worth noting that we support integrated resistive touchscreen technology as an option for an extra $500 on the Latitude XFR D630. Brett McAnally from the commercial product notebook team takes you through some of the details of the system, explains the kinds of customers who we designed it for, and discusses what distinguishes this prouct from others in this field.
Pricing starts at $3,899. See www.dell.com/xfr for more info on this product.

On Wednesday last week in London, UK, we held a gaming event to discuss and celebrate the enormous changes we are seeing in the gaming industry. At the event we launched the new XPS 630 and announced our sponsorship of team Dignitas. We also held a heavyweight gaming industry panel discussion, which included Dell, Intel, Alienware, NVidia, Ascaron, Gamerbase, Ubisoft, Dignitas.
My favourite bit of news from the day was the announcement that Dell is sponsoring team Dignitas, who I managed to catch in the afternoon along with Dell’s Adam Griffin. Team Dignitas is a leading professional gaming team based in the UK with gamers from more than 20 countries across the globe. This announcement as well as meeting Su-Joy Roy and Dominic Mulroy from Gamerbase, brought it home to me that Dell's interest in gaming goes well beyond delivering some of the best hardware (both XPS and Alienware) in the industry.
In the morning we asked Dell gaming experts Abizar Vakaria, Chris Shelton and Brian Joyce about the future of gaming. My apologies that you’ll hear a few clashes in the background as the crew are moving furniture setting-up for the event.
A phrase from Susan Bookbinder, our moderator, resonated with me. It was along the lines of, "Like a fine wine the gaming and gamers are maturing into an evermore discerning breed." Gaming is now a fashionable social activity that you can enjoy with your friends and make new friends doing so.
For me the discussion panel highlighted how Dell is working with a broad range of industry leaders to partner on and develop the best gaming experience available worldwide.
Note: panel members from left to right: Dominic Mulroy, Gamerbase; Ulrich Norf, Intel; Heiko tom Felde, Ascaron; Michel O’Dell, Dignitas; Susan Bookbinder; Abizar Vakaria, Dell; Su-Joy Roy, Gamerbase; Brian Joyce, Dell Alienware and Phil Wright, NVidia.
