British Business determined to Weather the Storm

Despite the tales of economic woe, a benchmark survey of leading British finance directors shows the majority of firms are weathering the storm and determined to come out the other side. Although there is much talk of redundancies, only a fifth of firms sampled by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) have reduced their workforce in the past year. Three quarters also predict headcount will stay the same or even grow in the next 12 months. The majority appears to be investing their way out of a recession with between 70 – 80% of firms planning to maintain or increase spending on marketing, staff training and capital expenditure. This is certainly reassuring if you have been worried about what the future holds for you because of the economic situation. Many of us are fearing that we will either have to cut back on staff, lose our jobs or that we have no hope of having a career in the future, however despite the high profile redundancies taking place, we are actually more secure then we are lead to believe. Here to offer advice on coping with economic downturn is Director of CIMA, Ray Perry. Whether you are an employer, an employee or a student who is unsure of his or hers future, then watch Ray’s tips on how you can beat the recession and look forward to a brighter future. 76% of people lay claim to a healthy diet, but further investigation reveals that despite honourable intentions, Britons literally don’t know what’s good for them and are in a daze over healthy eating guidelines. A new health study of 2,157 Britons, marking the launch of Warburtons campaign to encourage the nation to eat more fibre, reveals that while people are aware that fibre—typically found in bread, pasta, rice, fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts—is essential for keeping their digestive healthy, more than three-quarters (76%) of men and women do not know that the guideline daily amount (GDA) of fibre is 24g , despite half of respondents believing that they eat enough fibre. So, where does fibre come from, why is it important, and what exactly does it do for us? Lucky for us, one of Britain’s leading nutritionists, Jane Clarke, is hosting a whistle-stop web guide to fibre facts and figures. Not only will Jane bring you up to speed on such essential dietary issues as how much fibre you should be eating, she’ll also be lifting the lid on why a correct fibre intake does more than just keep your digestive system healthy. Brits cook enough extra food at dinnertime to feed at least an extra 19 million mouths. 39% of us admit to cooking enough extra food to feed at least one other person and 36% suffer from ‘waste worry’ over the amount of food they waste each week. With a food wastage bill of £10billion per year, perhaps that figure should be a little higher. In its quest to get people to ‘Plan It for the Planet’, research by the online grocer Ocado into waste awareness shows 1 in 3 bags of shopping go straight in the bin, and the most concerning thing is the majority of it goes completely untouched. One man who knows a lot about reducing waste is Arthur Potts Dawson who launched eco-friendly restaurant ‘Acorn House.’ In this exciting new video he explains how running a household isn’t that different from running a business and offers his top tips on keeping food waste to a minimum.
